By Clarence E. Mulford
Red Pictorial Cloth in Very Good condition with Good Plus Dust Jacket. American First Edition. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. "...a record of certain happenings that occurred in the otherwise peaceful lives of one Hopalong Cassidy and his companions on the range." A nice copy, with a nice DJ, of this very scarce title, which apparently is the First American Editon. [Copyright lines read: "Copyright, 1906, 1907 by The Outing Publishing Company, Entered at Stationer's Hall, London, England"] Red cloth pictorial cover is as sharp as when new. Front gutter has a partial vertical pencil mark. Corners gently bumped. Back cover is almost as new--except for some mild spotting along the top. Partial vertical pencil mark along gutter. White lettering on spine is faded. Binding is comfortably tight. Only mark in book is previous owner's name neatly inked on fep, with date of 1914. Top page edges have some dust darkening. Dust jacket, in Brodart, has a consistent, brownish tint that could well be the original coloring. Front of jacket has slight soiling along edges; at bottom, one nibble is present, along with a quarter-inch vertical clean tear reaching to the "E" of the author's middle initial. Top of jacket is clean. The two forward corners of front jacket have sixteenth-inch rubs at fold. Back of jacket in about the same condition, except for about an inch of darkening or soiling just above the center. Lettering on the spine of jacket is faded but clear. Several nibbles and quarter-inch tears evident at head and foot. Jacket cover depicts Hopalong seated with rifle at the ready. Rear jacket and fold-overs have ads for Burt's Popular Copyright Books. Pages generally clean and crisp, though scattered browning is evident. Book is 382 pages and represents Hopalong Cassidy's first appearance on his way to becoming one of America's best-loved Western literary and moving-picture icons.
