Published by Porter & Coates 1881. Custom coptic stitch binding with tan crocodile cover and gilt titling on front. Stitching is dark brown. Binding solid. 24 pages, including decorative title page and plain title page. Each page has a few lines of text and a b/w illustration. Laid in rear of book is duo-toned plate of Amélie Louise Rives. Rives, a goddaughter of Robert E. Lee and a granddaughter of the engineer and senator William Cabell Rives, Amélie Rives married John Armstrong Chanler (an heir to the Astor fortune) of New York. After their divorce, she married Prince Pierre Troubetzkoy of Russia. The couple resided at Castle Hill, near Cismont, Virginia. |
(The picture above of the decorative title page and the second title page look a bit blurry on the left side because I did not want to stretch open the book and harm the binding.) |
